On our Alaska/Yukon trip, we decided to take a flight tour over the Kluane National Park Glaciers. The tour was through Kluane Glacier Air Tours out of Haines Junction, Yukon, and we are so glad we did this before leaving the Yukon.
Mountains and glaciers cover 83% of Kluane National Park. The Kaskawulsh Glacier is an astounding 3–4 mi (4.8–6.4 km) wide at its broadest point. In the national park is Canada’s highest mountain, Mount Logan. Mount Logan is contained in the St. Elias Mountains, the highest coastal mountain range on Earth.
The bi-national Kluane-Wrangell-St. Elias-Glacier Bay-Tatshenshini-Alsek park system comprising Kluane, Wrangell-St Elias, Glacier Bay and Tatshenshini-Alsek parks, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for the spectacular glacier and icefield landscapes as well as for the importance of grizzly bears, caribou and Dall sheep habitat.
