The steam propeller drive vessel, CHINA that left Kingston caught fire, burnt to the waterline and sank near Nine Mile Point on October 13, 1872. The CHINA was built in Hamilton and was only one year old. At the time of her sinking, the CHINA was carrying 300 tons of pig iron. The crew was all saved by the propeller, the CITY OF LONDON. The fire started at the back of the boiler. Several other vessels had caught fire similarly.
The dark wreck dive offers an exploration of the steeple compound engine and a four-blade propeller. More of the wreck is visible on the port side, whereas the starboard side had burned down more than the port side.
