Upset Rapid is at mile 150 on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, just above Havasu Creek. Upset Rapid is rated about an 8 on the 1-10 scale used in Grand Canyon. River runners need to keep their eyes open for the large hole at the bottom of the rapid!
In 1923, during the Birdseye U.S. Geological Survey Expedition, Emery Kolb suffered a boatman’s worst nightmare when they dropped into a steep hole in the middle of the rapid and “upset” his wooden boat. Frank Dodge, another boatman on the trip, jumped into the river and retrieved the empty craft.
